I’m writing this post for people who are just starting to adopt from another country. It’s something I struggled with for a while that I am just figuring out how to talk about. As adoptive parents we have to become advocates- not just for our children, but for adoption in general. There is so much misinformation, bias and fear surrounding adoption. I have lost count at the number of bizarre “facts” (read- not facts) people have said about adoption, international adoption and adoptees to us in person.
It’s important to learn how to spread better information because when people know better, they do better.
We’ve received a shocking amount of comments (both online and in real life)-
“What? Are there no more American babies who need homes?”, “There are children right here living in the streets, why don’t you adopt them?”, “Did you even look into domestic adoption?” and even “Was a white kid not good enough for you?”
We realize we don’t owe a response to anyone, but we’ve thought about it a lot and we want to put our perspective out into the world.
Every child who needs a family is equally worthy. Whether they are from your country (or aren’t), they have a special need (or don’t), from little babies to older children at risk of missing a chance to be adopted…. every single adoption is one less child who needs a home.
It bums me out when people act like our choice to adopt Nova took an opportunity away from another child. And to be honest- I find these questions offensive because they imply that American children should be a higher priority.
Why?
I challenge you to rethink this perspective and speak out against it if you hear someone talking this way. These comments are mainly coming from people who have no experience with adoption (which to be fair, is most people) so I want to give people the benefit of the doubt. Maybe they haven’t thought it through. Still, this is a racist way of thinking that needs to stop. All orphans are equal. That is the only acceptable mindset.
There is no wrong child to adopt. EVER. It’s that simple. ♥
